Spence Waited Too Long To Fight Crawford, Bud Accused Of Avoiding Ennis
In today’s boxing news, Errol Spence Jr. should not have waited too long to take the fight with Terence Crawford.
That is according to trainer Stephen Edwards. The pair ultimately faced each other on July 29th, 2023, in a one-sided affair. Crawford dominated the fight to drop Spence three times before getting the stoppage in round nine.
And in doing so, Crawford became the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era. However, the manner in which Spence lost raised lots of question marks over the nature of his performance.
There were suggestions that the weight cut may have taken its toll, especially since Spence is a big welterweight. Meanwhile, the two car crashes, one of which resulted in a detached retina, were also offered up for reasons.
But ultimately, Edwards felt that the fight had been delayed for too long as Crawford grew into the weight class to stop all of his opponents at 147.
Spence Vs. Crawford
"All I can say is that’s one of the reasons why it’s not good to wait fights out. They’ve both been champions since 2017 and 2018. So when one guy is a little bit bigger, you got to make the fight when you’re more comfortable to make the weight. That’s just the reality behind it. You make the fight when you can’t make the weight, then I don’t think you can use that as an excuse with Errol being the A-side because the A-side has more control over when the fight gets made," Edwards stated
Despite Spence activating his rematch clause, reports have also linked Jaron Ennis with a fight against Crawford. Boots is the current IBF interim champion at 147, which puts him in line to face Crawford for all the belts.
Although that may be the case, there is an expectation that Crawford will eventually vacate his belts and move up 154, which would rule out an Ennis fight. But even if they were to face each other, the boxer Hank Lundy warned Crawford over the task at hand.
Crawford Vs. Ennis
"Does Jaron Ennis stand a chance against Bud?’ I’m going to be real. Boots ain’t to be f***d with, and I ain’t saying that because I’m biased and because he’s with Philly. A lot of people are going to leave Boots alone before he’s young, and I ain’t going to lie. Some of these young [fighters] hunger and energy is crazy. It’s not the same as fighting a guy that’s your age.
"They know what they’re doing. They’re going to leave him [Boots Ennis] alone. One thing about it. Boots is a big 147-pounder, and he’s cracking on both sides. I’ve been telling people this year. When I fought Crawford [in February 2016], they tried to get Boots to walk out with Crawford, and one thing that I respect. Not just him, but I respect his father and his brothers. They know me, I’m Hank Lundy. I’m going to talk my s**t, say what I say, and do what I do," Lundy stated
