Song Yadong Stops Umar Nurmagomedov In Upset
Song Yadong knocked out Umar Nurmagomedov in the first round at UFC Shanghai, handing the Dagestani clan its first knockout loss and dealing a rare blow to Russian wrestling dominance in mixed martial arts.
Yadong, who entered as a 4-to-1 underdog per MMA Mania, landed a fight-ending right hand as Nurmagomedov shot in for a second takedown attempt. The finish came after Yadong neutralized Nurmagomedov's wrestling and forced him to expend energy keeping the Chinese bantamweight grounded earlier in the round.
How Song Yadong Cracked The Russian Wrestling Formula
Yadong arrived with clear adjustments tailored to the Nurmagomedov style. He attacked the body early and often with his right hand, targeting Nurmagomedov's chest to drain his gas tank and create openings. He also kicked at range despite the takedown risk, refusing to cede the distance game entirely. When Nurmagomedov finally secured his lone takedown off a caught calf kick, Yadong forced immediate scrambles from deep half guard rather than accept bottom position.
"When the two returned to their feet with a minute remaining in the first, both men were moving a little slower," MMA Mania's Andrew Richardson wrote in his technical breakdown. Yadong had made Nurmagomedov work to hold him down, and when the Russian shot in again, he ran into the counter right that ended the fight. The knockout marked the first time a member of the immediate Nurmagomedov family had been stopped by strikes.
The result comes two weeks after Islam Makhachev was pushed hard by Ian Garry, who used similar tactics of attritional damage and smart scrambling. Russian wrestlers still dominate the sport, with Makhachev holding two titles and Khamzat Chimaev and Movsar Evloev near the top of their divisions. But Yadong's blueprint offers a template for future challengers willing to force the pace and make elite wrestlers pay for every second of control time.
Nurmagomedov had come within one round of beating Merab Dvalishvili for the bantamweight title last year and had won twice since. The rematch timeline is now uncertain.
