San Francisco outdoor boxing card cancelled amid permit issues
A boxing card scheduled for July 11 at San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza has been cancelled, promoter iVB announced Monday.
The event was set to feature WBO flyweight champion Anthony Olascuaga defending his belt against Andy Dominguez outdoors at the downtown venue. According to the promotion's statement, "growing logistical concerns" forced the scrapping of the card, per ESPN. The previously announced fights will be rescheduled for a new date and location to be confirmed.
Permit application withdrawn before attendance record attempt
The cancelled show was intended to draw more than 100,000 fans to the streets of San Francisco and break the world record for boxing attendance. That mark was set in 1941 when 135,132 spectators watched Tony Zale face Billy Pryor at Juneau Park in Milwaukee.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that local events company Silverback withdrew its permit application Monday morning, pulling the plug on the outdoor fight just over a month before the scheduled date. iVB head Ed Pereira had hoped to stage the record-breaking event outside City Hall.
No replacement venue has been announced for Olascuaga-Dominguez.
