Romero Claims Double Standard After Lopez Loss

Rolly Romero believes a double standard cost him his WBA welterweight title after losing a majority decision to Teofimo Lopez this past Saturday.

Romero dropped the belt to Lopez at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on scorecards of 115-113, 116-112, and 114-114. Lopez controlled the early rounds before Romero landed a left hook and right hand in the fifth that briefly wobbled his opponent. Romero searched for that same counter power shot the rest of the night but never replicated the success, leading to stretches of quiet action punctuated by brief exchanges through the final bell.

Romero Questions Judging After Clean Performance

At the post-fight press conference, Romero pointed to his unmarked face as evidence he deserved to keep the title. "Look at my face — he landed two clean shots. That's not enough to beat a champion," he said, per BoxingScene. "I hurt him multiple times. I want a rematch, for sure."

The former champion argued that other boxers at his level would be celebrated for the same tactical approach. "When somebody else does this, it's a master class," Romero continued. "When I do it, it's all political."

The defeat marks Romero's third career loss and first on the scorecards. His previous setbacks came by stoppage against Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz. Lopez now holds the WBA welterweight strap and Romero's demand for a second fight.
