Raoni Barcelos collapsed without an apparent strike in the fifth round of his fight against Raul Rosas Jr. at UFC Vegas 121, prompting one of the most unsettling finishes in recent UFC memory.

Barcelos and Rosas Jr. had battled through nearly five rounds when Barcelos was taken down and suddenly went unconscious halfway through the final frame. No punch or kick seemed to cause the shutdown. Rosas Jr. recognized something was wrong and held back from following up with ground strikes. Barcelos was removed on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital for evaluation, according to MMA Mania.

Barcelos Awake And Stable After Scary Collapse

Dr. Gustavo Medeiros, Barcelos' physician, told MMA Fighting that the bantamweight is lucid and talking. "At this moment, he is lucid and oriented," Medeiros said. "He is hospitalized strictly as a matter of protocol. He needs to remain under observation for a few days to assess his condition and make sure that everything remains stable and that he continues to do well." Reports indicate Barcelos is walking and eating.

The incident came on the same weekend that Mexican boxer Arturo Torres died following a seventh-round collapse in Mexicali. Torres, 26, was diagnosed with a brain blood clot, underwent emergency surgery, and spent six days in a medically induced coma before passing. The two episodes underscored the inherent risks fighters accept every time they enter the cage or ring.

Barcelos is expected to remain under observation for several more days before doctors clear him to leave the hospital.
