Ramirez Vs. Joe Smith. Jr. Post-Fight Comments
In today’s boxing news, Zurdo Ramirez outlined his plans moving forward following his win over Joe Smith Jr in his post-fight comments.
The Mexican bounced back following his loss to Dmitry Bivol to beat Smith on his debut in the cruiserweight division. And as part of that process, it put Ramirez in line for a shot at the WBA belt given that the bout was an eliminator.
As a result, Ramirez is in line to face Arsen Goulamirian for the title, something which appeared unlikely following Ramirez’s loss to Bivol.
Despite this being the case, Ramirez has other plans moving forward. A fight against Canelo Alvarez was being targeted as it would be a massive-Mexican blockbuster. Meanwhile, a rematch with Bivol at cruiserweight was also not out of the question.
Ramirez’s Comments
"Of course, he [Bivol] upset my ego and my soul. As a Mexican, I want a rematch. I want to beat him, and I want to be my best. I don’t need to look bad. I need to look forward to beyond. Whoever is in front, I need to beat the guy. I wish him nothing but the best. He’s a great fighter, a great champion [Bivol], and he needs to keep working & fighting for anyone.
"I think he’ll come up [to cruiserweight] eventually. I don’t see any point in coming back [to light heavyweight] if they don’t give me a good fight, I don’t need to do it. But if they give me a good fight, it’ll be good,"
"Anyone, I want all the champions. I want to be the first Mexican cruiserweight champion, and that’s my goal. That’s what I’m working for. Eventually, if he wants. Two Mexicans in the ring, that’s a war. Marquez, Barrera, all of them. It’s a great fight. All the fans want to see two Mexicans in the ring all the time," Ramirez
Meanwhile, Smith will have to regroup and consider where he goes next following another loss. In his last bout, Smith Jr. was stopped by Artur Beterbiev in the second round. Although that was at light heavyweight, his performance at cruiserweight was also lacking.
And at the age of 34, there will be questions over whether Smith Jr. can fight for another world title. The failure to make an impression in two world title fights in a row has left Smith with no big fights on the horizon.
In addition, following the death of his brother last year which did have an impact on the boxer, does he have the motivation to continue moving forward? Regardless of what the case may be, Smith was not impressed with his performance.
"I feel I was a little heavy on my feet. I wish I were a little more busy, but I hurt him a few times. He boxed well, kept his distance," Smith Jr.
