Rafael Fiziev surprised by UFC Baku main event slot after loss
Rafael Fiziev will headline UFC Baku this Saturday against Manuel Torres despite coming off a second-round stoppage loss to Mauricio Ruffy earlier this year. The 33-year-old Azerbaijani told UFC.com he did not expect the promotion to give him another main event opportunity so soon.
"My reaction was like, 'Wow,' and like, 'double wow,' because my last fight did not go good," Fiziev said, according to MMA Mania. "And they gave me a main event after that one, so it was just like, 'Wow.' I'm in a good place, you know. On Saturday, I have to show my fireworks."
Torres presents dangerous test for Fiziev's homecoming
The No. 11-ranked lightweight faces Torres at Baku Crystal Hall, where Fiziev fought in the co-main event last year to a roaring crowd. Torres has stopped every opponent in the first round and brings heavy power to the matchup. Fiziev called the Mexican striker "a very strong fighter with bombs in his hands," but noted both men carry knockout ability.
Fiziev sees Torres' height as an advantage but has dealt with tall lightweights before. Last year in Baku, he defeated 6'3" Ignacio Bahamondes, who had previously knocked Torres out cold. Torres is hunting for a ranking and a statement win on enemy territory.
UFC Baku takes place Saturday, June 27, at Baku Crystal Hall in Azerbaijan. This marks the promotion's second straight event in the country.
