Michael Morales preparing as replacement for UFC 330 title fight
Welterweight contender Michael Morales is preparing to make weight for UFC 330 in Philadelphia on August 15, positioning himself as a potential replacement for the main event.
Islam Makhachev defends his welterweight title against Ian Garry that night, but the Ecuadorian told MMA Mania he plans to show up regardless. "Either I'm going to be a replacement in this fight between Islam and Ian Garry, or I'll fight one more time against whomever," Morales said. "I'm still going to make weight for August 15th. I'm still going to show up to make weight and, well, with my luck, if God allows it and they let me fight that day, we'll be there fighting for the title."
Why UFC 330 backup plan matters despite clean records
The odds of a scale fail are slim. Garry has never missed weight in his UFC run, and Makhachev moved up from lightweight specifically to avoid brutal championship cuts. Still, title fights tend to attract chaos, and Morales represents the obvious insurance policy given his ranking and availability.
Morales also acknowledged that matchmakers could slot him elsewhere on the card — names like Carlos Prates have circulated — but insisted he will prepare for welterweight regardless of opponent. UFC 330 ceremonial weigh-ins are set for August 14 in Philadelphia.
