Prograis Rules Out A ‘Catchweight' For A Potential Tank Davis Fight

In some recent boxing news, Regis Prograis has no intention of facing Gervonta Davis at a catchweight moving forward.

Prograis is currently on course to face Devin Haney on December 9th, 2023, as the boxer defends his WBC junior welterweight title.

Meanwhile, Davis currently campaigns at lightweight as the boxer prepares for a comeback fight following his recent release from prison for violating the terms of his house arrest.

Therefore, a bout between the two would require either one of the fighters to move up or down in weight. Davis has shown a tendency to impose rehydration clauses on bigger fighters, as shown with the Ryan Garcia bout.

The latter’s team was very vocal about being ‘weight-drained’ as Garcia was stopped in the seventh round following a ten-pound rehydration clause.

Prograis On Davis

"The weight drain was a big issue. It was a huge issue. If I was negotiating this fight on my terms, that would have never happened because for Ryan Garcia to fight at 136, at the catchweight they agreed upon, even one pound makes a huge difference. And then having to weigh in the next day and come under 10 pounds was a huge factor," Oscar De La Hoya

As such, Prograis made it clear that he would not entertain such a thing.

"I think it’s going to be all big fights going on around these three weight divisions. No, no catchweight. 140 it is. I told you. I want to be like the Hagler of my division. No, we’re not doing no catchweight. It’s going to be 140, and that’s it. Of course [it’s the biggest fight]. You’re talking about the ‘Face of Boxing’ between him and Canelo. So, I can’t fight Canelo. So, him. It would probably be the biggest fight between him, Ryan, or Teo. That is the biggest fight," Prograis stated

Those words were also echoed by Devin Haney, who equally ruled out a Tank Davis fight if it included a rehydration clause. The ‘Dream’s struggles to make lightweight were evident during the two weigh-ins for the George Kambosos Jr. fights. And now that Haney has moved up to 140, a move back down to 135 appears unlikely with a rehydration clause.

Haney On Davis

"Yeah, of course [I would stay at 135 pounds to fight Davis]. I would love to stay at 135 to fight the biggest names…Truthfully I wouldn’t and I couldn’t do a rehydration clause. At the end of the day, I am the man with the belts and hardware. Obviously, the world knows I have trouble making 135. Maybe we can do it at 140 or even 135. No rehydration [clause]. I never do rehydration [clauses]," Haney said

Ultimately, Davis would be viewed as the A-side, given the commercial value that the boxer brings. But the fact that Prograis and Haney possess world titles must also be factored in.

So moving forward, one fighter will have to compromise for the bouts to get made. Otherwise, boxing fans will lose out once again.
