Whittaker says Buatsi clash 'could happen' after WBC ranking

Ben Whittaker has opened the door to a domestic showdown with Joshua Buatsi, saying their proximity in the WBC heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light-heavyweight rankings makes the fight realistic.

“I think me and Buatsi are kind of close. I think we're two and three in the WBC [rankings], so something like that could happen.”

What Ben Whittaker said

Whittaker and Buatsi are both British contenders at 175 pounds. The WBC rankings place them close together, and both fighters have been vocal about testing themselves against top domestic opposition. A clash between the two would resolve one of the division's most talked-about potential matchups.

What it moves

Whittaker stopped short of guaranteeing a date but suggested the sanctioning picture favours a meeting. Buatsi has previously expressed willingness to fight fellow Brits if the opportunity arises. The WBC could force the issue if both men continue winning.
