Molly McCann explains why Katie Taylor family link stayed private

Tom Rashid
UFC & MMA Lead Writer ·

Molly McCann has revealed she kept her family connection to Katie Taylor quiet to avoid the appearance of leveraging the boxing star's name. The UFC fighter said the relationship was little-known in combat sports circles.

“It was the best kept secret in combat sport because Katie doesn't speak much and I didn't want to look as if I was riding off her coat-tails”

— Molly McCann, via BBC Sport

What Molly McCann said

McCann, a Liverpool flyweight who fought six times in the UFC between 2018 and 2023, is a cousin of Taylor. The Irish lightweight unified world champion has remained private about family matters throughout her career. McCann had not publicly discussed the link until now.

What it moves

McCann's disclosure comes as both women have stepped away from active competition. Taylor last fought in November 2024. McCann has not competed since losing in March 2023. The family tie may explain McCann's long-standing public support for Taylor's boxing career.
