Jermall Charlo: negotiations fell through, I fight for legacy
Jermall Charlo says recent fight talks collapsed because he will not compromise on preparation time or legacy value. The former middleweight world champion told Ring Magazine he needs a full training camp before returning.
“I was close to fighting. Negotiations didn't work out in my favor. I'm not here to just fight for money. I'm gonna fight for my legacy, and I want to make it worthwhile. You can't just rush me into a camp. I like to have a full camp like I do now.”

What Jermall Charlo said
Charlo has not fought since June 2021 when he defended his WBC middleweight title against Juan Macias Montiel. The Houston boxer relinquished his belt in 2023 but has remained in the WBC rankings. He had been linked to a bout with Carlos Adames, though no deal materialised.
What it moves
Charlo's insistence on full preparation could push any comeback into late 2025. The middleweight division moved on during his absence, with Adames claiming the WBC title and Janibek Alimkhanuly holding the IBF and WBO straps. Charlo will need a marquee opponent to re-establish his standing.
