PFL's resurgence hits wall: Strong roster, no audience

Professional Fighters League is putting on some of the best shows of its existence, and almost nobody knows it.

Since ousting founder Don Davis last year, PFL has quietly assembled a legitimately strong roster and delivered consistent action, MMA Mania reports. The promotion ditched its convoluted tournament-league format late last year and now operates as a traditional fight card model. Through eight major events in 2026, 55 percent of fights have ended inside the distance, most of them competitive scraps rather than obvious mismatches. The names carry weight: Usman Nurmagomedov might be the best lightweight anywhere, Johnny Eblen ranks among the top middleweights globally, and Dakota Ditcheva has become one of the most electric female fighters in the sport. Eblen's brutal knockout of Impa Kasanganay at PFL Austin last week produced one of the year's nastiest finishes.

Why PFL's ESPN deal is killing momentum

The product is not the problem. Distribution is. PFL sits behind ESPN Unlimited, the network's streaming service priced at 29.99 dollars per month, a paywall most casual fans will not cross. Even subscribers who have the app struggle to find the promotion buried in the interface. "ESPN isn't doing anything to promote us," PFL CEO John Martin told MMA Mania. "It is the biggest problem we have right now, and it's frustrating for me, as you might imagine. We had to fix the product, and we did that. ESPN hasn't invested time or money into the PFL, and it's a shame."

Martin, who spent years at TNT before taking over PFL, understands the stakes. The promotion is negotiating with potential broadcast partners including Netflix and Fox, per the report, and the next deal will determine whether PFL can establish itself as a legitimate number two promotion or fade into irrelevance. Fighters need leverage beyond UFC, prospects need stages, veterans need landing spots. PFL has the roster and the matchmaking to fill that role. It just needs people to actually see it.

PFL Washington this Saturday features Thad Jean against Shamil Musaev for the vacant welterweight title, arguably the best fight of the weekend across all major promotions.
