PFL CEO open to Usman Nurmagomedov UFC move after contract expires
Professional Fighters League CEO John Martin says he has no problem with undefeated lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov exploring UFC options once his current deal runs out.
Martin told The Sheehan Show that Nurmagomedov will fight one more time under his existing PFL contract, after which the promotion plans to extend an offer but will not pressure the 19-0 Dagestani to stay. "The company isn't focused on creating individual stars, they're focused on building a league," Martin said, per Sherdog.
PFL's league-first philosophy vs star contracts
The stance reflects PFL's tournament-driven business model, which prioritises seasonal competition over marquee free-agent signings. Nurmagomedov, the younger cousin of retired UFC lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov, joined PFL through its 2023 acquisition of Bellator, where he had held the 155-pound title since 2022.
Martin's wait-and-see approach leaves the door open for a bidding war with UFC, which has historically courted undefeated prospects from rival organisations. Nurmagomedov has not publicly stated a preference, though his next bout is expected to take place at PFL's New York event on 31 July.
