Pereira Vs. Gane Breakdown
Alex Pereira is chasing history on Sunday — and the White House lawn is where he intends to make it.
The Brazilian faces Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC heavyweight title at UFC Freedom 250. A victory would make Pereira the first fighter in UFC history to hold world titles across three separate weight classes.
Pereira vacated his light heavyweight title to pursue that record at heavyweight. He is 13-3 inside the Octagon. Gane arrives having not fought since October 2025, when his heavyweight title fight against undisputed champion Tom Aspinall ended in a no-contest after Aspinall suffered accidental eye pokes that ultimately required surgery on both eyes.
The winner moves directly into the conversation around Aspinall's undisputed title. The Briton remains on the sidelines recovering from bilateral Brown's syndrome, the eye condition that required surgery following the October no-contest. He has not confirmed a return date, and his situation is further complicated by an ongoing contract dispute between his manager Eddie Hearn and the UFC.
The Approach
Pereira's entire tactical identity is built around one thing: finding the finish. Against Gane, who is the most mobile and technically refined heavyweight in the division, Pereira will need to be patient in a way that doesn't come naturally to him. He'll use his physical pressure to herd Gane toward the fence, cutting off the ring and removing the space that makes Gane's movement effective. The danger is that in his urgency to land the big shot, he overcommits and leaves himself exposed to Gane's countering, which is sharp and precise.
Against Pereira, Gane needs to use the entire Octagon, refuse to be corralled against the fence, and make Pereira pay on the way in with his jab and right hand counter. Gane's combinations are fluid and accurate, and if he can keep the fight in the middle of the Octagon at the range he prefers, his technical output should accumulate across rounds.
