Owen Takes Blame For GFL's Failed Launch

Global Fight League founder Darren Owen has accepted responsibility for the promotion's collapse just weeks before its planned April 2025 debut.

Owen told BetOnline's The Fight Guys podcast that a major investor withdrew funding on short notice, forcing the cancellation of the GFL's inaugural California events. The promotion had signed multiple former UFC, Bellator, and PFL veterans before the financial backing evaporated.

"It was literally just one investor. We had a commitment to a significant amount of money, they funded their initial amount, and I'll take the blame for not having either the knowledge or the right people surrounding me at the time to make sure the funds were secure long-term," Owen said, as reported by BJPenn.com.

Owen confirmed the GFL restructured as a publicly traded entity and set an October 17 launch date in Las Vegas. The promotion will then stage an international card in Buenos Aires in November. Former UFC bantamweight title challenger Marlon Moraes is set to come out of retirement for an upcoming GFL event.

The GFL's team-based format features independent owners operating rosters that compete through a regular season and playoffs. Owen noted the promotion will field men and women on the same teams, distinguishing itself from the defunct International Fight League's all-male squads. He maintained the GFL learned from the IFL's failures and will not compete directly with established promotions.

The promotion is expected to announce fight matchups and additional signings in the coming weeks ahead of its October debut.
