Ortiz Jr. Eyes November Middleweight Debut

Boxing Editorial Team ·

Vergil Ortiz Jr. is set to make his middleweight debut in November, with manager Rick Mirigian assessing a list of established opponents that includes Jermell Charlo, Erislandy Lara, Tim Tszyu and Carlos Adames.

The move up to 160 pounds comes after a frustrating period of inactivity and failed negotiations. Ortiz last fought in November 2025, stopping Erickson Lubin in two rounds. Since then, a highly anticipated welterweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super welterweight showdown with Jaron Ennis — a fight that would have been one of the most compelling matchups in the division — fell apart without ever getting made. With Ennis unavailable, Ortiz and his team have shifted focus to a new weight class entirely.

The options being explored reflect a genuine ambition to hit the ground running at middleweight rather than ease in through a soft debut. Lara and Adames are active and credible names in the division, capable of providing a meaningful test on night one at 160. Charlo carries the biggest name on the list — a former undisputed junior middleweight champion with significant accomplishments — though his near three-year absence from the ring following a one-sided loss to Canelo Alvarez in September 2023 raises legitimate questions about where he currently stands. Tszyu remains in consideration as another established name who would generate genuine interest.

Ortiz has the style to make an immediate statement at middleweight if the right opponent is chosen. The November target gives Mirigian a relatively short window to finalise a deal.
