Orlando Bloom's Boxing Transformation For ‘The Cut' – ‘It Was Brutal, Harsh On My Body And Mind'
Orlando Bloom underwent a significant transformation for his film ‘The Cut’, where he plays a boxer.
Bloom’s character comes out of retirement as he seeks to gain his fighting career back on track. After a career-ending defeat, the ex-champion is looking to leave on better terms with a title. However, he is facing a major struggle to make weight, just days out of his fight. He undertakes intense training, pushing himself to the limit to make the weight. Bloom stars alongside John Turturro, who portrays his maverick trainer Boz. Caitríona Balfe also stars, while Sean Ellis directs the project. The film is scheduled for release on September 5th in UK and Irish cinemas.
Boxing is littered with cases, where cutting weight can put a strain on the body. Vergil Ortiz Jr. fainted in 2023 after failing to make 147, forcing him to eventually move up to 154 pounds, as his Eimantas Stanionis was called off. Chris Eubank Jr. also failed to make the 160-pound weight limit for his Conor Benn fight, while the ten-pound rehydration clause raised safety concerns. Although Eubank came out victorious, the weight cut impacted him during the fight. Bloom also revealed the challenges he faced preparing for this role.
Bloom Reacts
"The movie is a bit like a train wreck, honestly. It’s watching someone come undone mentally and physically. My headspace from that experience was full of PTSD from making the movie, to be honest. That’s something that I have to navigate now as we go through press, because it was a very raw experience. I had to drop an extreme amount of weight. A lot of the work was done for me almost through the process of doing that, which was really brutal, really harsh on my body and my mind, because you don’t sleep when you’re not eating, and you don’t really feel in your body," Bloom said
