Opetaia Sues IBF, Alleges Conspiracy

Jai Opetaia has filed a lawsuit against the IBF, involving the WBC, WBA, WBO, Eddie Hearn, and others to hurt him for signing with Zuffa Boxing.

The lawsuit seeks reinstatement as IBF cruiserweight champion, damages, attorneys' fees, and an injunction preventing the sanctioning body from naming a new cruiserweight champion while the litigation is pending.

The sequence of events that produced the lawsuit began when Opetaia signed with Dana White's Zuffa Boxing and defended his IBF cruiserweight title against Brandon Glanton in March. The IBF refused to sanction the fight, characterising it as an unsanctioned unification attempt, and stripped Opetaia of the belt.

With the IBF title gone, Opetaia's next target was WBC champion Noel Mikaelian. That path closed when WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman ordered a three-belt unification between Mikaelian and David Benavidez instead.

Opetaia's grievance may be legitimate. The IBF stripping a fighter for competing in a bout the body did not sanction is within its own rules, regardless of how those rules were applied here. The Benavidez-Mikaelian unification directive may have been motivated by factors beyond Opetaia's Zuffa affiliation.

What is harder to argue is that the outcome was unforeseeable. White stated publicly that Zuffa had no interest in working with the sanctioning bodies. Signing with Zuffa under those conditions while holding an IBF title meant placing the belt's status in direct conflict with the IBF's regulatory framework.
