MMA Mania Asks Readers For Book Recommendations

Tom Rashid

MMA Mania opened its Monday community thread with a question about what readers have on their nightstands, moving away from fight talk to discuss books.

Site editor Tim Edwards shared that he recently wrapped up Waubgeshig Rice's novel and began reading Patrick deWitt's work, which earned a spot on the 2011 Man Booker Prize shortlist. He turned to the MMA Mania community for suggestions in the western genre.

Readers Offered Western Genre Starter List

The thread featured recommendations spanning several decades of American frontier literature. Among the titles: three novels by Cormac McCarthy published as a trilogy, Oakley Hall's gunfighter story, a John Williams novel about buffalo hunting, Larry McMurtry's Texas ranger epic, Philip Meyer's multi-generational saga, and Charles Portis's revenge tale that became a film twice over.

Other picks included Ron Hansen's account of the Ford brothers, Jim Harrison's Nebraska story, Pete Dexter's South Dakota novel, and A.B. Guthrie Jr.'s mountain man narrative. The post also flagged weekend MMA news involving referee criticism, Conor McGregor's pay-per-view projections, and potential matchmaking for Jean Denis Malott.
