MMA Mania Mailbag: Prates or Prochazka for UFC 1 time travel?

MMA Mania's weekly mailbag returned with reader questions about lightweight contenders, hypothetical time travel scenarios, and whether Alex Pereira's foul complaints carry weight.

The most entertaining prompt asked which current UFC fighters would thrive or flounder if dropped into the original 1993 tournament. Tim Edwards picked Francis Ngannou as the likeliest to steamroll the field, arguing that his size and power would have overwhelmed even Royce Gracie's jiu-jitsu. Jesse Holland threw Jiří Procházka's name in the mix "just to see how crazy things get," per the mailbag post, while Alex Behunin suggested Carlos Prates for chaos and Leon Shahbazyan as a guaranteed early exit.

Lightweight Title Picture After Gaethje's Win

On the lightweight division following Justin Gaethje's recent title win, the panel split on whether Ilia Topuria deserves an immediate rematch. Edwards backed either Gaethje against Arman Tsarukyan next or a unification bout with Charles Oliveira that would put the BMF strap on the line. Jesse Holland ruled out Topuria's rematch claim entirely, noting the former champion registered zero defenses before getting stopped, and suggested the promotion wait to see how Conor McGregor's return against Max Holloway shakes out.

Thomas Myers proposed Tsarukyan face the winner of Paddy Pimblett and Renato Moicano as a true number-one contender eliminator, giving the UFC time to assess Topuria's recovery timeline.

The mailbag also addressed Michel Pereira's upcoming middleweight clash with Shara Magomedov at UFC Baku. Multiple panelists downgraded expectations for the Brazilian, with Behunin writing that Anthony Hernandez "took that man's soul and his confidence" in their previous fight. Edwards warned of high letdown potential if Pereira continues fighting conservatively and Magomedov hesitates to engage.

MMA Mania runs the mailbag every Friday and logs unanswered questions for future editions. UFC Baku airs this Saturday with Magomedov and Pereira as the co-main event.
