Mendez Praises Prates Ahead Of Makhachev Clash

Islam Makhachev's coach has offered high praise for Carlos Prates ahead of a potential welterweight title fight that could land as early as January.

Javier Mendez told MMA Junkie that Prates looked exceptional against Jack Della Maddalena, singling out the Brazilian's precision striking as the best in the division. "His precision striking, he has to be the most explosive, pin-point accuracy out of all the welterweights, in my opinion," Mendez said. "His striking is superb, and his confidence is rising."

The American Kickboxing Academy head coach highlighted Prates' range management and explosive knees, drawing a comparison to former boxer Ricardo Mayorga. Mendez noted Prates' cigarette-smoking persona mirrors Mayorga's old-school swagger. Despite crediting Prates' jiu-jitsu as top notch, Mendez identified wrestling as the one area where the Brazilian might be vulnerable, though he cautioned against viewing it as a true weakness.

Mendez warned that Makhachev will not overlook anyone in the welterweight top tier, adding that his fighter's standup has been elite for years. Prates has torn through the 170-pound ranks over the past twelve months, positioning himself for a shot at Makhachev's belt. The matchup could headline UFC's first numbered card of 2026.
