McGregor Backs Garry Despite Fan Criticism
Conor McGregor threw his support behind Ian Machado Garry ahead of the welterweight's title shot at UFC 330, calling him a "stud" as fan criticism of the Irishman mounted.
Garry faces Islam Makhachev for the welterweight belt later this month after consecutive wins over former champion Belal Muhammad and knockout artist Carlos Prates. But his recent media appearances drew fire from fans and pundits, per BJ Penn. Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub called Garry's interview tour some of the worst he had seen from a top fighter, and a partnership with PETA added to the backlash.

McGregor's Defence of Garry Ahead of Makhachev Fight
McGregor weighed in on an Instagram post referencing Garry's media struggles, writing: "Kid is a stud, and I back him to become champion!" The former two-division champion suffered another leg injury against Max Holloway at UFC 329 but aims to return next summer, possibly for a trilogy bout.
Garry's comments in interviews — including a claim that the world would be better if run by women — rubbed fans the wrong way in the leadup to the biggest fight of his career. McGregor's endorsement marks one of the few public votes of confidence for the 170-pound contender.

UFC 330 takes place later in August with Garry chasing his first title. McGregor will watch from the sidelines as he recovers from the Holloway setback.
