Makhachev Targets UFC Return Before Ramadan 2027

Islam Makhachev wants his second welterweight title defense booked before Ramadan starts in February 2027, but minor spine injuries discovered after UFC 330 have put that timeline in question.

The welterweight champion underwent three MRI scans following his successful first title defense against Ian Machado Garry last month in Philadelphia, MMA Mania reports. The tests revealed what Makhachev described as small spinal issues that require strengthening work before he can return to competition.

Prates Claims UFC Promised Him Next Shot

"After the fight, I had three MRIs and had my entire spine checked," Makhachev said, per MMA Mania. "There are a few small issues, so I'm working on them. It's nothing serious. I'm just strengthening my spine."

Ramadan is expected to begin around February 8, 2027, depending on the lunar calendar. That leaves the UFC a narrow booking window of December 2026 or January 2027 if the promotion wants to accommodate Makhachev's request. Brazilian knockout artist Carlos Prates has repeatedly stated the UFC promised him the next welterweight title shot after stopping Geoff Neal, Leon Edwards, and former champion Jack Della Maddalena in consecutive fights.

Makhachev previously suggested Prates should face undefeated contender Michael Morales first, but Prates has insisted he has already earned his opportunity. An early 2027 title defense would allow Makhachev to fight twice next year, matching the pace he has maintained when healthy throughout his career.

The UFC has not announced Makhachev's next opponent or confirmed whether Prates will receive the title shot he believes was promised.
