Makhachev Sympathizes With McGregor After UFC 329 Loss

Islam Makhachev offered an unexpected show of sympathy for Conor McGregor after the former two-division champion's comeback ended 69 seconds into his UFC 329 bout with Max Holloway.

McGregor injured his knee on the first kick he threw in the rematch, forcing a referee stoppage before the fight ever developed. The Irishman could not plant his leg after the injury, ending his first appearance in the Octagon since 2021.

Makhachev Wanted To See McGregor Fight After Five Years

The reigning UFC welterweight champion told Complex Sports that while he expected Holloway to win, he did not anticipate such an abrupt finish. "Honestly, I feel bad," Makhachev said, per Sherdog. "I know Max was going to beat him, but not fast like this, in the first minute. I want to see how he fights after five years. And honestly, feel bad when this happen."

The reaction stands out given the history between McGregor and Makhachev's camp. McGregor and Makhachev's mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov clashed in 2018 in a fight that ended with Nurmagomedov submitting the Irishman in the fourth round before a brawl erupted. Makhachev was among the Dagestani teammates who jumped into the cage during the chaos.

McGregor has one fight remaining on his UFC contract and says he plans to return next summer. Makhachev defends his welterweight title against Irish fighter Ian Garry at UFC 330 on August 15 in Philadelphia.
