Mendez: Makhachev Win At UFC 330 Proves GOAT Status

Islam Makhachev's coach believes his fighter is one win away from ending the greatest-of-all-time debate.

Javier Mendez told MMA Fighting that Makhachev's welterweight title defense against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 will push him past Jon Jones in the GOAT conversation. The lightweight champion vacated his belt after setting the division record with four consecutive defenses, then stopped Jack Della Maddalena in November to claim the welterweight strap.

"My opinion, I think he's bordering on close to being the greatest of all-time," Mendez said. "This win, hopefully we get by this one, and then one more, then I don't know if there's going to be any question who is the greatest fighter of all time."

Garry earned the title shot over Michael Morales, who finished Sean Brady in his last outing. Mendez acknowledged that Morales and Carlos Prates are both legitimate contenders but called Garry the toughest matchup available. The coach described the Irish welterweight as quicker and more well-rounded than Della Maddalena, who many considered the most dangerous opponent for Makhachev at 170 pounds.

Mendez praised his fighter's discipline and willingness to follow coaching instructions rather than freelance in the cage. "He's a coach's dream," Mendez said of Makhachev, who works closely with former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in camp.

UFC 330 takes place Aug. 15 in Philadelphia.
