Makhachev Enrolls In Master's Program In Dubai

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has enrolled in a master's degree program at a Russian university's Dubai campus while planning his next title defense.

Makhachev, who stretched his promotional-record win streak to 17 fights with a victory over Ian Garry at UFC 330, is now pursuing graduate studies at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, according to a statement on the institution's website reported by Sherdog.

Makhachev Balances Title Reign With Academic Ambitions

The university framed the enrollment as evidence of the champion's drive beyond competition. "Makhachev reminds us that a person's strength is measured not by what they've already achieved, but by whether they're ready to become a student again," Plekhanov stated in its announcement.

The former lightweight titleholder is targeting a second welterweight title defense before Ramadan. He has named Carlos Prates as a potential challenger, though the UFC has not confirmed his next opponent or bout date.

Makhachev's academic move follows a career defined by systematic improvement under the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov's tutelage. He captured the lightweight belt in 2022 and moved up to welterweight last year, collecting straps at two weight classes before age 34.
