Makhachev's Corner Work Criticized By Doctor
Islam Makhachev's attempt to treat a shoulder injury in his teammate's corner has drawn criticism from a medical professional.
The UFC welterweight champion was working the corner for Professional Fighters League athlete Magomed Magomedov at PFL Tampa when the Russian appeared to dislocate his shoulder against Daniel Marcos. Between rounds, Makhachev tried to pop the joint back into place, but the shoulder remained compromised and he eventually threw in the towel before the third round.
Doctor Questions Makhachev's Technique
Sports physician Dr. Brian Sutterer posted video of the incident on X, writing that it "should be the go to reference for everything you do to NOT be successful in putting a shoulder back," per Sherdog.
Makhachev defended his welterweight title against Ian Garry at UFC 330 one week before cornering Magomedov. The PFL Tampa bout marked Marcos' promotional debut after departing the UFC's bantamweight division.
Magomedov is scheduled to return to action later this year as part of the PFL's playoff bracket.
