Dern On Garry's 'Women Run World' Remarks

UFC strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern broke from what many expected when asked about Ian Machado Garry's recent claim that the world would be better if run by women.

Garry made the remarks during his pre-fight media tour ahead of Saturday's UFC 330 main event against welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. The comments drew mockery from fans and fellow fighters, but Dern — one of the sport's biggest female stars — offered a different perspective.

Dern Backs Traditional Leadership Roles

At her UFC 330 media day appearance, Dern said she comes from a more traditional background, per BJPENN.com. "I come from a more traditional upbringing, and obviously the women in my family are super strong and independent. But I like the guy protecting and leading," she said. "I like to relax — if I need to go to war with him, I will, but I'm a Mom and stuff like that. We don't depend on guys; we're independent, but I do like the man taking the lead."

Garry shut down non-fight questions about the controversy when he met with reporters earlier this week. The welterweight contender enters UFC 330 on a two-fight streak after stopping Belal Muhammad and Carlos Prates, though he has struggled to win over the UFC fan base since signing from Cage Warriors.
