Jones Takes Blame For Steveson's Quick Octagon Exit

Jon Jones said he ordered Gable Steveson to leave the octagon immediately after the heavyweight prospect suffered a brutal 12-second knockout loss at UFC 331 this past weekend.

Steveson caught a left hand from Sean Sharaf in the opening seconds of their bout in Los Angeles and bolted backstage before Bruce Buffer could announce the result, drawing boos from the crowd. Jones, who served as Steveson's cornerman, took to Twitter to clarify that the decision was his, not the fighter's.

"I've seen some reports on line and I really wanted to clear the air. It was my decision to take Gable straight to the back after the fight," Jones wrote, per MMA Fighting. "Honestly it was the first time in this situation for me and my instant reaction was to get my friend to the back to make sure he was ok."

The UFC heavyweight champion added that Steveson's work ethic remains strong despite the setback. Jones said he believes the 2020 Olympic gold medalist will become one of the best heavyweights in the promotion.

Steveson came to UFC 331 with a 4-0 record and four first-round finishes. He joined Jones' camp while the champion prepared for his fight against Stipe Miocic, a stint that convinced the freestyle wrestler to pursue MMA full-time.

Steveson has not announced his next move following the knockout loss in Los Angeles.
