Jones On Makhachev GOAT Talk After UFC 330
Jon Jones has weighed in on the greatest-of-all-time conversation surrounding Islam Makhachev after the welterweight champion's record-setting performance at UFC 330.
Makhachev surpassed Anderson Silva for most consecutive UFC wins last weekend with a dominant victory over Ian Machado Garry in his first welterweight title defense. The performance sparked fresh debate about the Dagestani's place in the sport's history, particularly given his status as a two-division champion.
Jones Questions Makhachev's Title Fight Record
The former two-division titleholder responded on social media by posting a graphic comparing career title fight victories. Jones leads the all-time list with 16, ahead of Georges St-Pierre, Demetrious Johnson, and Amanda Nunes, per BJPenn.com. Makhachev sits at seven title wins following UFC 330.
"Hopped on social media and heard there was a new GOAT?" Jones wrote on X. "I'm so confused, make it make sense."
Jones walked away from the sport last year after a contract dispute with the UFC over a potential fight with Tom Aspinall. He has repeatedly dismissed GOAT claims for Khabib Nurmagomedov, citing the former lightweight champion's 2020 retirement. Henry Cejudo echoed Jones's position, telling media outlets the GOAT discussion around Makhachev remains premature despite the UFC 330 win.
Makhachev shut down retirement talk following his latest victory and currently holds the top spot in the UFC's pound-for-pound rankings. The welterweight champion has not yet announced his next title defense.
