Craig Jones has mapped out a defensive blueprint for Ian Garry ahead of the Irishman's welterweight title shot against Islam Makhachev at UFC 330.

Makhachev and Garry meet Aug. 15 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, where the Russian champion enters as a massive betting favourite. Per a Sherdog report, Jones posted a technical breakdown to the B-Team YouTube channel explaining how Garry can neutralise the grappling attack that has overwhelmed most of Makhachev's opponents.

Jones zeroed in on Makhachev's single-leg entries and what separates them from standard shots. Rather than simply latching onto a leg and driving, Makhachev gets his elbow deep and pulls the limb into his body while closing distance with his hips. The Australian noted that Garry has a habit that could prove useful: the challenger tends to keep his free foot on the inside when defending takedowns, a positioning choice Jones compared to a concept used by former UFC champion B.J. Penn. That inside foot can function as a butterfly hook if the fight hits the mat.

The positioning carries risk, Jones cautioned. While the inside foot provides a stronger frame, it also opens up ankle attacks and gives Makhachev opportunities to manipulate the framing leg. Jones has game-planned for Makhachev multiple times previously, working with Alexander Volkanovski and Jack Della Maddalena in their camps against the Dagestani.
