Jon Jones: Alex Pereira came in too big for UFC White House loss
Jon Jones believes Alex Pereira put on weight too quickly ahead of his heavyweight debut loss to Ciryl Gane at the UFC White House event, according to MMA Mania.
Jones, who spent three years preparing his body for the jump from light heavyweight, told Red Corner MMA that Pereira would have been better off competing around 230-235 pounds rather than bulking up to match Gane's size. "I felt like his power would have possibly translated over," Jones said, per the report. "In the fight you just saw him, he was waiting. He was second-guessing things, questioning things, and that's one of the worst things you can do in a fight."
Jones: Gane's southpaw stance created perfect storm
Pereira was fighting at 205 pounds less than a year before facing Gane on the South Lawn in Washington. Jones, who dominated both Gane and Stipe Miocic after his own move to heavyweight, said Pereira never found his rhythm against the French contender. "It feels like a nightmare when you're out there in front of your opponent, and you know the moves, know you should throw the punch or kick or go for that takedown — then you just don't," Jones added.
Jones pointed to Gane's southpaw stance and unorthodox movement as additional factors that overwhelmed Pereira in the interim title bout. "He was fast, powerful, unorthodox. It was the perfect storm for Pereira, and he didn't survive it," Jones said.
Jones and Pereira have been linked to a potential superfight, though no bout is currently scheduled. If the matchup happens, Jones hinted he would use plenty of southpaw looks to replicate what worked for Gane.
