Johnny Walker's New Chin Stuns At Heavyweight

Johnny Walker's heavyweight experiment just validated itself in ways his knockout power never could.

The Brazilian, who spent years crumbling under pressure at light heavyweight, absorbed hard right hands from Waldo Cortes-Acosta at UFC Vegas 124 and stayed upright. He got rocked twice, per MMA Mania's Andrew Richardson, but never wobbled into the chicken-dance collapse that defined his 205-pound run. Instead, Walker used half guard and clinch work to recover, let his body kicks accumulate damage, and eventually caught Cortes-Acosta with a backfist counter to become the first fighter to stop the sixth-ranked contender.

Walker's Durability Transformation At Heavyweight

The turnaround is stark. Walker entered 2026 coming off consecutive knockout losses, looking fragile and finished as a title prospect. Richardson, a professional fighter at Team Alpha Male, had advocated for the heavyweight move years earlier, noting Walker was ranked atop both weight classes on the Brazilian regional scene before his UFC debut. "He's never reacted particularly well to getting hit, but Walker was chicken-dancing or collapsing stiffly, like a tree in a hurricane," Richardson wrote of the light heavyweight years.

Cortes-Acosta had survived heavy hitters like Sergei Pavlovich and Robelis Despaigne without being stopped. Walker changed that, and the confidence shift was obvious throughout the fight. He still throws backfists more often than jabs, still runs from punches rather than blocking them, but the absence of a weight cut appears to have restored enough durability to let Walker's unorthodox striking carry him through adversity.

Walker will likely jump to sixth in the heavyweight rankings when they update. With the division's thin depth, a title eliminator against someone like Curtis Blaydes is no longer far-fetched. Two years ago, his career looked over. Now he rides his best streak since his 2018 Octagon debut.
