Jay Alderete chokes out ex-UFC fighter in foul-filled Fury FC bout

Undefeated bantamweight prospect Jay Alderete choked Cameron Smotherman unconscious in the second round at Fury FC 121 on Sunday, but the finish came only after a foul-filled fight that nearly sparked a melee in Houston.

Alderete, 19, dropped the former UFC fighter with a head kick, then locked in a D'arce choke that put Smotherman out cold, per MMA Fighting. After the tap, Alderete gestured at his opponent and continued jawing as Smotherman came to, prompting security to step between the fighters. Smotherman tried repeatedly to get back to the cage, but personnel kept him away.

Repeated fouls overshadow Alderete's best win

The bout was marred by a series of low blows from Alderete. A flush low kick in the opening round badly hurt Smotherman, but the referee issued only a warning. Early in Round 2, another groin strike dropped Smotherman, and the official finally deducted a point. A third foul later in the frame drew no penalty. When action resumed after that break, Alderete landed the head kick that set up the finish.

Alderete improved to 6-0 as a pro, with five stoppages. His previous opponents carried a combined 9-23 record, making Smotherman the first veteran test on his résumé. After the win, Alderete called for a UFC contract as the crowd chanted his name. Smotherman addressed the loss on Instagram.
