Jaime Munguia Finally Addresses Failed Test – ‘I Did Not Cheat'
Jaime Munguia has broken his silence on a failed drug test after having been cleared.
The 28-year-old was facing mass scrutiny after testing positive for a banned substance following his May 4 rematch victory over Bruno Surace. Both of Munguia’s A- and B-samples failed for exogenous testosterone. UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) and the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) launched an investigation.
Munguia’s team, however, was quick to launch a defense, arguing that the positive result was a "false positive" caused by "accidental contamination with pregnenolone." Munguia’s team also asserted that the levels detected were "extremely low" and that the substance "provided no performance advantage" and were "fully consistent with accidental exposure." He was successful, as he had this to say.
Munguia Reacts
"Honestly, it was very difficult. When something like that happens, people and most of the media are quick to judge without knowing the full story. But I knew the truth, and I trusted the process would clear my name. I’ve built my career on clean competition, respect for the sport, and integrity inside and outside the ring. The levels detected were extremely low, provided no performance advantage, and were fully consistent with accidental exposure.
"I did not cheat. The science proves it, and I am grateful to the WBC, BBBofC, and UKAD for acknowledging this truth. I respect the testing system because it’s important to keep the sport clean, but I do think improvements can be made. Fighters’ reputations and careers are on the line, so it’s important that the process is precise, fair, and transparent. Mistakes can have big consequences, which I now know firsthand, and no fighter should go through that if they’re innocent," Munguia said
Munguia’s case creates a complex landscape for other fighters. It highlights the double standards that may exist in the sport. Conor Benn, a British boxer who was also involved in a failed drug test scandal, has been allowed to box with many unanswered questions. Munguia’s case, which was handled more discreetly and resolved more quickly. This disparity could fuel more resentment among fighters who feel they are not given the same treatment.
