Islam Makhachev defends UFC title against Garry at 330

UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev will put his belt on the line against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 on Aug. 15 in Philadelphia, ESPN reported Thursday.

The promotion confirmed the matchup after weeks of speculation about Makhachev's next opponent. Garry, who competes at welterweight, moves up in weight to challenge the Dagestani champion in what marks his first UFC title shot.

Makhachev's title run continues in Philadelphia

Makhachev has held the lightweight strap since October 2022, when he submitted Charles Oliveira at UFC 280. He has since defended the title three times, most recently finishing Dustin Poirier in the fifth round at UFC 302 last June.

Garry brings an undefeated record into the bout and is coming off a decision win over Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 in December. The Irish fighter has long campaigned for a shot at gold, though few expected his first crack to come at 155 pounds against one of the sport's most dominant champions.

The Philadelphia card represents Makhachev's return to the United States after his last title defense took place in Abu Dhabi. Weigh-ins are scheduled for Aug. 14.
