Hernandez Reveals Day Job Pays More Than UFC Bonus

Luis Hernandez banked a Performance of the Night bonus at UFC Vegas 121 earlier this month, but the undefeated newcomer says his day job still pays better.

Hernandez, a deputy sheriff with the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, submitted Sedriques Dumas with a standing guillotine inside a minute on two days' notice. The $100,000 bonus pushed his fight purse well into six figures, yet his law enforcement salary remains higher, he told Ariel Helwani in a post-fight interview first reported by Sherdog.

Hernandez Plans To Keep Both Careers

"The support that I get from my agency is amazing," Hernandez said, per Helwani's platform. "You don't have to be a fighter, but you could actually have a life outside of work and the agency supports that. I have a great sheriff. I spoke with her, and she asked, 'Are you thinking about leaving?' I said, 'No, I never want to leave. I want to do both.'"

The 9-0 middleweight also serves on the department's Priority Response Team. He joins a short roster of UFC fighters who have maintained full-time careers outside the cage, most notably former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who worked as a firefighter and paramedic throughout his title reign.

Hernandez, a Dana White's Contender Series graduate, has not announced his next opponent or fight date.
