Hearn Defends Machado Garry After White Criticism

Zuffa Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has defended Ian Machado Garry's respectful demeanor at UFC 330, pushing back on criticism from UFC president Dana White.

Machado Garry showed deference to lightweight champion Islam Makhachev throughout their Philadelphia main event, an approach that drew sharp words from White afterward. The UFC boss suggested the Irish welterweight might wait a while before getting another title shot, according to BJ Penn.

Hearn Backs Machado Garry's Respectful Approach

Hearn, who recently signed Machado Garry, said the fighter's personality should be embraced rather than changed. "Ian is a fascinating character… I get the opinion of someone like Dana saying 'oh he's too nice, he's showing too much respect'," Hearn said, per Bloody Elbow. "But that is Ian, he is not going to switch and start shouting and being disrespectful."

The promoter compared Machado Garry to boxer Katie Taylor, noting both athletes carry themselves with similar dignity. Hearn acknowledged questions about whether the Irishman should have pressed harder in the fifth round but defended the overall performance as competitive. "It was a close fight, it wasn't like he was outclassed because it was a close, close fight and he is a tremendous talent," he said.

White's comments suggested frustration with Machado Garry's unwillingness to adopt a more aggressive persona, though no timeline has been announced for the welterweight's next appearance inside the Octagon.
