Garcia Blasts Those Doubting His Mexican Heritage
Ryan Garcia is tired of having his identity questioned by the people he considers his own.
The WBC welterweight champion hit back at critics attacking his Mexican heritage, addressing a line of criticism that has followed Mexican-Americans who do not speak fluent Spanish for generations and shows no sign of stopping.
"It's actually really frustrating being Mexican American and having to hear from my own blood and people giving me shit. Leave me alone. I'm here representing, fighting, and enjoying my culture. USA is where I was born, and Mexico is running through my blood,” Garcia
Garcia was born in California to Mexican-American parents and has carried both the American and Mexican flags throughout his professional career. The pride in his dual identity has been visible and consistent — not performed for an audience but embedded in how he presents himself during fight weeks and in public appearances.
The criticism he is responding to comes from within his own community, which is the part that appears to sting most. External attacks are easier to dismiss. Being told by people who share your background that you do not belong to it is a different kind of frustration, and Garcia named it plainly rather than deflecting.
The timing places the exchange in the middle of his preparation for the likely Conor Benn fight, targeted for September 12 in Las Vegas. Garcia has one of boxing's largest social media followings and has never been reluctant to engage publicly on subjects beyond the sport.
