Gaethje On Topuria's Lightweight Future

Justin Gaethje does not believe Ilia Topuria belongs at lightweight.

The UFC champion, who stopped Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 earlier this year, told the Flagrant Podcast that the Georgian is undersized for 155 pounds and should return to featherweight. Topuria quit on his stool during that bout after absorbing sustained punishment from Gaethje.

Gaethje Predicts Topuria Struggles At 155

"I don't think he's a lightweight," Gaethje said, per MMA Junkie. "I think he should go down. I think he can beat Volkanovski and be champion at featherweight. I don't think he'll ever be a champion at lightweight. He can't beat Arman (Tsarukyan). He's going to have a difficult time with Paddy (Pimblett)."

Gaethje acknowledged that Topuria possesses the skill to compete at lightweight but questioned whether the former featherweight king has the physical tools for sustained success. "This sport is crazy, so a little luck, a little chance is always involved. Can he get lucky, and is he skilled enough? Absolutely. I think he's undersized for lightweight. That's what I felt," he said.

The champion also criticized Topuria for projecting invincibility before their fight, suggesting the unbeaten aura created unrealistic expectations. Topuria had knocked out Charles Oliveira in his lightweight debut before the loss to Gaethje altered his trajectory in the division.

Gaethje next defends his belt against an opponent yet to be determined, with the UFC expected to announce his next title defense in the coming weeks.
