Gaethje On Timeline For Next Fight Decision

Justin Gaethje plans to wait until later this year before deciding whether to defend his UFC lightweight title.

The 37-year-old champion told the Flagrant Podcast that he is still recovering from injuries sustained during his title win at UFC Freedom 250 in June, per MMA Junkie. Gaethje said he has a deep bruise in his knee and still cannot punch with one hand three months after the fight.

Gaethje Acknowledges Tsarukyan As Next Contender

Gaethje confirmed that Arman Tsarukyan would be his opponent if he defends the belt. "It's not that I don't want to fight Arman, it really isn't," he said, according to the report. "He's the next in line; if and when I defend this championship, that will be who I fight. I just don't know."

The new champion, who has competed in 40 fights including his amateur career since 2008, said he needs time to recover both physically and mentally. "I need to rest my brain because a lot of training went into those fights," he explained.

Gaethje said he will make what he called a business decision and life decision when the time comes. The lightweight title picture also includes featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, who has called for a shot at moving up.
