Justin Gaethje cracks ESPN pound-for-pound top 10 after title win
Justin Gaethje has broken into ESPN's pound-for-pound top 10 after capturing the UFC lightweight championship from Ilia Topuria.
The title-clinching performance vaulted Gaethje into the rankings panel's elite tier, displacing other contenders who had previously occupied the bottom half of the list. ESPN's panel evaluates fighters across all weight classes based on accomplishments and dominance regardless of size.
How Gaethje's title changes the lightweight picture
Topuria entered the fight as the reigning champion but dropped out of the top 10 entirely after surrendering the belt. The swap marks one of the sharpest single-fight swings in recent ESPN rankings memory.
Gaethje had been hovering outside the top 10 for months despite wins over ranked contenders. The lightweight strap provided the résumé anchor the panel needed to slot him among the sport's best fighters pound-for-pound.
ESPN updates its rankings after every major UFC, Bellator, and PFL event. Gaethje's next title defense date has not been announced.
