Ennis Responds To Benn Fight Possibility
Jaron Ennis has left the door open for Conor Benn — but right now his attention is on Xander Zayas.
Speaking ahead of his unified junior middleweight title challenge on Saturday, Ennis was measured when asked about a potential future fight with Benn, who has been linked to a move up to 154 pounds.
"He's a solid fighter. If it come across the table, we can make it happen. Things will come to you at the right time. You got to be patient. You can't worry about what this person doing or worry about what that person doing. Just be patient and wait your turn," Ennis
Ennis unified the welterweight division, moved up to junior middleweight, and has let his performances do the talking rather than chasing names in the press. The Benn mention is an acknowledgment rather than a callout — the kind of response that keeps options open without creating noise before the fight that actually matters this weekend.
Benn is currently in talks for a September welterweight fight with WBC champion Ryan Garcia, with his manager confirming he has already signed for the bout. A move to junior middleweight remains a longer-term possibility rather than an immediate reality, which puts any Ennis fight some distance away regardless of interest on either side.
The more pressing question for Ennis is what happens against Zayas on Saturday. Ennis is the bigger name and the heavier puncher, but Zayas has not shown the kind of vulnerability that makes him a straightforward night at the office. A Benn fight at 154 pounds means something different if Ennis is champion. Saturday night is where that conversation properly begins.
