Ellerbe Says No To Davis Vs. Haney – ‘We Do Business'

Leonard Ellerbe has ruled out a fight between Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney by stating they are on different trajectories.

The duo were first linked with a fight at 135 pounds. Haney had become the Undisputed Lightweight Champion and moved up to 140 pounds. As he did so, Haney initially stated that he would be open to moving back down to 135 only for the Davis fight. But following his win over Regis Prograis to become the WBC Junior Welterweight Champion, Haney backtracked on those comments, telling Davis any fight would have to happen at 140.

Given their recent PPV sales, there were also disagreements over who was the A-side. Davis’ last fight with Ryan Garcia did over 1.2 million PPVs, while Haney’s bout with Prograis allegedly did 50,000. There are also suggestions that Haney was too big as he rehydrated to 165 pounds on the night of the fight with Prograis when he weighed 140 pounds during the weigh-in. These factors have now led to a situation where Ellerbe has dismissed the fight.

Davis Vs. Haney

“Big fights will be made when they make sense. Tank will beat all those guys. Even if you wanted to make a deal, you couldn’t make a deal because you get paid what you weigh. What you weigh is talked about behind the scenes, not in the public. We do business. They’re doing the best of what they’re doing for their team and their guy. I don’t know what they’re doing.

"They’re [Haney] not even in the same weight class [as Tank Davis]. Tank could make 130 lbs if he needed to. Tank doesn’t walk around at these crazy weights. You can’t make a deal when you’re not in a situation to make a deal. The offer that would have come that way. These fighters think they’re bigger [draws] than they actually are,” Ellerbe said

Davis’ Legacy

Nevertheless, if Davis does move up to 140 and not fight Haney, it will fuel the suggestions that he is ducking The Dream. Rolando Romero is currently facing Isaac Cruz for the WBA Junior Welterweight Title. Both fighters have been linked with a Davis rematch, which could play out given that a title would be on the line.

But again, that is not the fight fans had hoped for. With Shakur Stevenson announcing his retirement from the sport, boxing fans are not seeing Davis fight the biggest fights. But Haney admitted that he would take the same deal Ryan Garcia had received, earning him £30 million. That has never been offered to him, nor is it likely to come, leaving fans without that super fight.

“I don’t know anything about that. That’s good. Tank Davis is on an entirely different level. The deal that we gave Ryan? Stop it. First off, they’re two different weight classes,” Ellerbe added

Saudi Arabia has expressed their intention to make that fight, leaving the door open if a big offer is put on the table. Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingnews.com.
