Eddie Hearn Reacts After Teofimo Lopez Claims DAZN Will Be Finished In Five Years
In the latest boxing news, Eddie Hearn has blasted Teofimo Lopez after the boxer claimed that DAZN would not be in boxing within five years.
The comments arrived on the back end of news that Showtime will no longer be a part of boxing in 2024. And as part of that process, the network departed boxing after having been in the business for around 40 years.
Thereafter, the task has turned towards PBC’s next move with reports that Amazon Prime and DAZN are being considered as networks moving forward.
And yet, Lopez predicted the same ending for DAZN moving forward. The ’Takeover’ is well aware of the platform, having boxed under it once when he faced off against George Kambosos Jr.
However, it was a night to forget as Lopez suffered the first loss of his career. In the aftermath of that process, Lopez had a few choice words to say about the network.
Lopez On DAZN
"The whole s**t was a scheme, bro. DAZN, I was on the DAZN platform. They gave it to Kambosos ‘cause they know what I was gonna do with it. They knew what I was gonna do, I was gonna drop (the belts) then it’s a longer process for Devin to become ‘undisputed.’ It’s all a game, man, they pay that s**t," Lopez stated
And it continued with the comments about DAZN’s standing in the boxing game.
"I give DAZN no more than 3 years left in Boxing. Maybe 5 just to prolong the damage," Lopez
Those comments did not sit very well with Hearn, who immediately hit back at the fighter. DAZN had been modelled on the basis that it would drive out pay-per-view moving forward.
However, the failure of the network to achieve that backfired after DAZN began to implement pay-per-views as separate events on top of their subscription.
Nevertheless, if DAZN does end up acquiring PBC onboard, the network’s standing would increase. And with Matchroom/Golden Boy Promotions under their banner, the potential for DAZN is huge. That is why Hearn had no time for the background noise that was coming his way.
Hearn On Lopez
"Five? It’s a lot more than some give them. How long has DAZN been going now? Five years or four years? When they started, people gave them six months; people gave them a year. Now, all of a sudden, they’ve just done an event last week, and they have 1.3 million subscribers added just to last week. They’re a huge platform globally for boxing. I think he was also criticizing Top Rank and ESPN as well. Teofimo Lopez, he’s on another planet," Hearn stated
Although that may be the case, DAZN still has a way to go before it can rival the success of Top Rank and ESPN. The combination is arguably one of the best around, given Top Rank’s ability to showcase and develop up-and-coming fighters.
And if DAZN can have a similar impact moving forward, then that can only be a good thing. Time will tell how it all plays out moving forward.
