Dustin Poirier would end retirement for Conor McGregor IV at 170
Dustin Poirier says a welterweight bout with Conor McGregor could bring him out of retirement.
Poirier, who retired after losing to Max Holloway last year, told the UFC's Deep Waters podcast that he would consider ending his break from competition for a fourth fight with the Irishman. The twist: he wants to move up a weight class. "Whenever he is healed up, hit me up, Conor," Poirier said. "I'll come back and whip you again. I would come back to whip him again. At 170."
McGregor's injury timeline complicates potential fourth fight
McGregor returned at UFC 329 in Las Vegas after five years away but tore ligaments in his knee during a first-round stoppage loss to Holloway. Per Sherdog, the former two-division champion plans surgery and has vowed to honor the final fight on his UFC contract. That timetable could stretch into 2027, depending on his recovery.
The two lightweights are tied 2-1 in their trilogy. McGregor stopped Poirier at featherweight in 2014, but Poirier knocked him out in their 2021 rematch at lightweight. Their rubber match later that year ended when McGregor broke his leg in the opening round. Poirier went 2-4 in his final six UFC appearances, including two failed lightweight title bids, before calling it a career.
No date or venue has been discussed for a potential fourth meeting.
