Does Ryan Garcia Deserve Scorn Or Sympathy After Rollercoaster Few Months?

Barely a day goes by without Ryan Garcia being in the headlines – and usually, not for the right reasons.

The lead-up to his epic fight against Devin Haney was dominated by concerns about Garcia’s mental health following a succession of bizarre outbursts, conspiracy theories, and full-blown breakdowns on social media.

That he came in well over the 140lbs super-lightweight limit for the fight, while drinking beers at the press conferences, only fueled further concerns about the American’s stability.

It was all passed off, and even praised, as some sort of genius marketing strategy once Garcia handed Haney his first professional defeat. He may have missed the weight limit and been fined $1.6 million as punishment, but the money he made on the backend, including the $10 million he won by betting on himself, far outweighed the up-front cost.

Garcia’s time on top of the world didn’t last long, though. Weeks later, news came out that ‘King Ry’ had failed two drug tests for the banned performance enhancer ostarine. The B-sample has since come back positive, leaving Garcia’s boxing career potentially in tatters.

Personal And Boxing Problems For Garcia

The Californian’s reaction to the whole saga defied the typical approach. Instead of stern-faced video messages or professionally crafted statements from lawyers, Garcia chose to laugh off the whole thing and continued to party.

Now he is back in the news for a series of social media posts in which he shared some difficult personal updates and claimed he has retired from boxing. It comes two weeks after he was arrested in Beverly Hills for vandalism.

“Mom has cancer, I’m being sued, my supplements were tainted, going thru a divorce, always GETTING S**T TALKED on the internet FOR YEARS, Devin asking for my victory to be taken away, I’m getting hit with everything, I STILL LOVE GOD, HE IS EVERYTHING,” Garcia posted on X.

“Yall judge me on the things I say. For example Caleb Plant situation. He talked about me when I never talked about him. While I’m going thru a really hard time in my life. I’m human I’m not God. I will make mistakes. I’ve really only tried to put money in everyone’s pockets. Live everyone and make everyone laugh. I LOVE GOD WITH ALL MY HEART REGARDLESS WHAT EVERYONE THINKS.”

Turning his attention to his boxing career, Garcia continued: “Boxing will be alright without me. But still sucks, I was fun in the game. And it was fun to punch people.

‘I’m Officially Retired’

“Yall may catch me out and about but as far as boxing I don’t know. There is so much corruption I’m over it. I may do acting or singing. I’ll still be training but I’m hurt and done with it and everyone. The sad part is I’m a great boxer And I entertain and knock people out. I’m sad bc I 💙 boxing. Praying for everyone and I hope everyone has a great life.”

Before he signed off with: “I’m officially retired.”

Whatever fans might think of Garcia and his latest posts, it’s clear he is going through a lot. On top of resolving the issues around his failed drug tests and boxing future, there are serious personal problems, too – and it’s all playing out in public. That’s a lot to handle for any 25-year-old.

There is plenty about the crisis in which Garcia finds himself that deserves sympathy and support. Boxing and the fame that comes with it can be brutal, and the sport is filled with fighters exploited for money and status.

Garcia needs to make sure he is surrounded by the right people who are looking out for his best interests, both personally and professionally.

Garcia Part Of The Problem

At the same time, it’s difficult to escape the feeling that part of the problem is Garcia himself, particularly when it comes to his career. He has done himself no favors in letting every moment of his life play out on social media, and while he has successfully leveraged the platforms to launch and scale his boxing profile, he has also endured the downside through trolls and unwanted attention.

Then there is the failed drug tests and his general attitude about the whole scandal. Doping in any sport is a serious offense but in combat sports when athletes are putting their lives on the line, it takes on another level of seriousness.

Garcia can protest that his supplements were contaminated – and he may be proved right – but his refusal to take any responsibility or show any remorse has not helped his cause.

There is no telling what comes next in the constant saga that is Ryan Garcia’s life, but he needs to make sure that both himself and the people around him handle it all with more maturity.
