Mackenzie Dern defended her strawweight title at UFC 330 but did little to convince skeptics she belongs in the same conversation as Weili Zhang.
Dern swept the scorecards against Gillian Robertson on Saturday night in Philadelphia, taking 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 tallies in a fight that never approached the fireworks UFC brass clearly hoped for. She threatened a rear naked choke late in the opening frame, per MMA Mania, but Robertson survived to the bell and the threat level dropped from there.

Dern Controlled But Never Finished Robertson
The champion landed multiple takedowns and controlled position on the mat across the middle rounds, but a second submission attempt never materialized. Round five saw Dern spend extended stretches on her back. She was never in real danger, but the bout stalled into the kind of grinding affair that does not build stars.
Zhang vacated the belt in October 2025 to move up to flyweight, where she absorbed a lopsided loss to Valentina Shevchenko the following month. Nine months have passed with no word on her next fight. If the Chinese star returns to 115 pounds, most observers believe she would handle Dern with ease. Saturday's performance will only deepen that perception.

Dern is scheduled to appear at the UFC 330 post-fight press conference Sunday morning.
