Oscar De La Hoya pumps brakes on Gervonta Davis vs Floyd Schofield
Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya has walked back talk of a lightweight title clash between Floyd Schofield and Gervonta Davis, pointing instead to a potential fight between Schofield and Lucas Bahdi for the vacant WBA strap.
Speaking during Golden Boy's DAZN broadcast, De La Hoya said Davis remains a "champion in recess" under WBA rules and suggested Schofield should face a different top contender for the full belt. "Let Schofield fight the next available top contender, who could be maybe Bahdi, that would be a terrific fight for the full world title," De La Hoya said, per Bad Left Hook. "Maybe down the road, we can make that Gervonta fight happen."
Why the Davis fight stalled
Davis has not fought in 15 months, last appearing in March 2025 when he drew with Lamont Roach Jr. Schofield, 19-0 with 13 knockouts, has been inactive for a year himself. De La Hoya acknowledged Davis's ongoing legal troubles as another complicating factor, saying Davis "has to take care of his issues" and may be "trying to figure out life in general."
The WBA has reinstated champions in recess before when the money and politics align — Seiya Tsutsumi and Antonio Vargas both returned to full champion status recently. But De La Hoya framed the Schofield-Bahdi matchup as the cleaner path forward, with a Davis superfight left as a possibility further out. Schofield is expected to compete for the WBA lightweight title by late 2026.
